Bioscience ClubhouseCT Presents: Intelligent Operating Room – The Next Generation, Featuring Paul Hermes

October 23, 2018 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Consumer electronics have evolved quickly over the last ten years, and our connection to each other and to the data that help us navigate the world around us have become essential elements of our life experience.

But medical devices have not kept up. Regulatory barriers and a lack of competitive pressures have stifled innovation, and as a result (for example) acute care centers are remarkably, and distressingly… often… dumb. Until just a few years ago, one well known device in most every operating room in the US was powered by a PowerPC chip developed in 1991.

Innovation is beginning to find its way into the device world. Robots, for instance, have become a platform upon which a truly intelligent operating room will someday be built. The EHR is becoming a platform that is finally being integrated in a meaningful way with a patient’s care throughout treatment. And tools such as the Apple Watch and other like devices have begun to blur the lines between health and healthcare.

We will explore one particular aspect of this evolution – robots in the operating room. Hopefully those insights will be helpful in gaining an understanding of the transformation taking place in that particular setting. And maybe we will gain some insight into the broader impact of data and intelligence in healthcare.

Mr. Hermes is Medtronic’s Entrepreneur in Residence responsible for the incubation of technologies to revolutionize the practice of surgery. For the last four years, he has led the team that will launch Medtronic’s first surgical robot.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Hermes served as Chief Technology Officer, Vice President, Research and Development (R&D) for Covidien’s Surgical Solutions segment. Since joining the Company in 1991, Paul’s teams have launched some of the medical device industry’s benchmark products including the TriStapleTM, iDriveTM, SILSTM, AbsorbaTackTM and LigaSureTM product lines. He has been instrumental in revitalizing the company’s product portfolio, and established Covidien’s first innovation footprint in Asia.

Mr. Hermes is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He is the holder of a number of US and international patents. Mr. Hermes has been honored with the highest technical honors of Covidien and Medtronic – the 2014 Covidien Chairman’s Lifetime Innovator Award and a 2015 induction into the Medtronic Bakken Society.
